Impact of the Global Financial Crisis on Local Communities in Moldova
This study was commissioned to the EXPERT-GRUP think-tank by the UNDP-Moldova with the purpose to assess qualitatively, and to the extent possible, quantitatively, the impact of the global financial crisis and associated economic downturn on Moldovan local communities and to identify possible responses that local communities can adopt to cope with the crisis. The report identifies the main weaknesses that have made local communities in Moldova vulnerable to the financial crisis and explain how the crisis boils down to the community level. Authors have analyzed quantitatively the impact of the crisis on labor market. In a separate part, the report assesses the situation of the local budgets in the context of the crisis. Another section deals with the impact of the crisis on economic and social situation of the households and individuals. The report also evaluates to what extent local companies have been affected by the crisis. The final part makes general conclusions and some policy recommendations to the government, local public administration and all other stakeholders that can influence the development policy.
Child Poverty in Republic of Moldova
This study documents the phenomenon of the child poverty in Republic of Moldova, its origins, evolution and major causes, magnitude and implications. Analysis deals with both monetary and non-monetary sides of the phenomenon.
This document is available only in Romanian.
Poverty of the Children Left Behind by Moldovan Migrants
This short report focuses on the impact of migration on the situation and povertu of the Moldovan children left behind by migrating parents. It also finds that the total number of these children is large and the official figures underestimate the extent of this phenomenon. Three alternative methods are used to estimate the real magnitude of this phenomenon.
Analysis of State’s Responsiveness to Child Protection Issues in Republic of Moldova
This paper deals with a number of child protection issues in the Republic of Moldova. It identifies and assesses main strengths and weaknesses of the child protection policies in the Republic of Moldova and analyzes the basic trends and needs in this area. Being explorative in character, the paper looks more at the substance rather than to the dimension of child issues and policy needs.
2009/2010 National Human Development Report "Climate Change in Moldova: Socio-Economic Impact and Policy Options to Adapt"
The 2009/2010 National Human Development Report provides a comprehensive and in-depth analysis of the strong impact of climate variability and climate change, and extreme weather events on sectors vital to human development in Moldova: water resources, ecosystems, agriculture and energy, transport infrastructure and health. As ascertained in this report, the climate change challenges should be fully introduced into the national policy agenda, they should not be ignored and left for future generations. The development policies should also aim at advancing the interests of their intended beneficiaries – the people. Therefore, the human development perspective is one of the central features of this report as it tries to shed more light on the way climate change will affect Moldova’s development trends and agenda and, ultimately, the hopes and opportunities of Moldovan people.
