Stunning Economic Growth: Do We Accept the Illusionary Comfort or Try to Change the Development Paradigm?

On June 15, new data on GDP growth were published. The 8.4 percent growth in the first quarter is the highest rate recorded since the global economic crisis. Even though the growth of Moldova’s economy in early 2011 exceeded that of most CIS countries, this trend is part of the general trend of the region. Other countries have also seen major increases in their GDPs: Belarus - 10.9%, Latvia - 10.1%, Romania - 6.7%. However, the persistent problems in some EU countries, including those hosting large communities of Moldovan emigrants, should not be ignored as they might have strong repercussions on Moldovan economy in short- and medium term. This analysis shows what economic trends are the most worrying.
