Building a citizen’s budget understanding;

Implementation period: December 1, 2012 – November 30, 2013;

Funded by: Soros Moldova Foundation, Good Governance Program;

Project goal: Inform the society on the creation of the public budget and the public money by presenting data in a visual, descriptive and accessible form.

Main activities:

  • Analyze multiple sets of data (the BOOST data tool and other open data sources);
  • Create BudgetStories.md, which will include interactive modules for users, on the tax system, the budget calendar;
  • Work with the IT and design partners of the project to create data stories / info graphics / visual displays of the relevant findings in the largest spending sectors, including: education, health, agriculture and public administration;
  • Maintain constant communication with the key stakeholders in the areas of the project, so our analyses will tackle the most relevant questions in the sectors.

Main outputs and outcomes:

  • BudgetStories.md - simple and interactive website;
  • Data stories and info graphics of analysis results on sectors;
  • Interactive modules (such as the real time budget calendar and tax calculator).

Project expected impact:

A better understanding by citizens, especially the active members of the society on the operation of the public finance system and the way it influences their everyday lives, an understanding that will ultimately contribute to a plenary contribution of society in the budget process and a more efficient spending of the public money.
