Project title: Evolution of the Foreign Direct Investment in Moldova;

Implementation period: October 26, 2009 – March 31, 2010;

Funded by: UNDP - Moldova;

Project goal: Elaborate and present in public discussions the policy study  “Evolution of the Foreign Direct Investments in the Real Sector of the Moldovan Economy”;

Main activities:

• Analyzed existing statistical data  on Foreign Direct Investment in Moldova, both those collected by National Bureau of Statistics and by the National Bank of Moldova;
• Assessed the quality of the data collected;
• Used the data for building econometric models to analyze the impact of FDI on various sectors of the Moldovan economy;
• Wrote a model-study showing how existing statistical data can be used to improve understanding of the Moldovan economy and to design evidence-based policy;
• Presented the results of the project at a roundtable;

Main outputs and outcomes:

• Policy Study “Impact of the foreign direct investment on economy of the Republic of Moldova”, in Romanian and English languages;
• Presentation delivered at the roundtable organized on 27 of July 2010;

Project impact:

The study assessed in a systematic way Moldova’s performance in attracting FDI as compared with other countries. It showed, at sectors-level, the impact of the FDI on the economic growth, on efficiency and competitiveness of the companies, on investment decisions and on labor employment. The report and its conclusions were welcomed by the Ministry of Economy and used for subsequent policy decisions (industrial parks) and were widely quoted in the national media. The results of the study were reflected in about 10 interviews given to TV, radio and printed media.
